About this list
The A1 level of the Common European Framework (CEFR) is the first step in French: you can introduce yourself, order in a café, ask for directions and talk about your family. This collection has 895 vocabulary cards and 122 sentence cards, 1017 flashcards in total.
It covers vocabulary only: the grammar is in the French A1 Grammar collection, and reaching A1 also takes listening and speaking practice.
We built it around the topics of the DELF A1 exam and the A1 descriptors of the CEFR, and every card was reviewed by a native French speaker. A few words usually taught at A2 stayed in when they are part of daily life, like « le frigo » (the fridge) or « le parapluie » (the umbrella). Flashcards Master is not affiliated with France Éducation international, which runs the DELF.
Each card shows English on the front and French on the back, so you practice producing the French word, which is what you need to speak. Questions show both the formal (vous) and informal (tu) forms.
Next step: the French A2 Vocabulary collection.
Pronouns, articles and verb forms are in the French A1 Grammar collection.
Not sure where to start? Follow the 12-week plan to reach A1.

Questions
How many words do you need for French A1?
The CEFR sets no official number: it describes what you can do, not how many words you know. Exam prep guides often mention a few hundred words. This collection has 895 vocabulary cards and 122 sentence cards, like « J'ai faim » (I'm hungry) or « C'est combien ? » (How much is it?).
How long does it take to learn the A1 vocabulary?
With 20 new cards a day and daily reviews, you can go through the 1017 cards in about seven weeks. Spaced repetition then brings back each word just before you forget it.
Is this list enough to pass the DELF A1?
No list is enough on its own. It covers the vocabulary of the exam topics, but the DELF A1 also tests listening, reading, writing and speaking, so combine it with practice in those areas.
Is there a printable PDF?
Yes. Every deck page has its own printable PDF, an English and French table, and the link at the top of this page downloads all 24 decks in one file. Each PDF has a QR code to add the cards to Flashcards Master.
Are the decks free?
Yes. Adding a deck is free, and the free version of Flashcards Master lets you review up to 100 cards a day.
