About this collection

Each deck starts with a few rule cards, then exercises that make you produce the right form: complete a sentence, make it negative, put it in the passé composé, choose between two forms. The back of every exercise shows the full corrected sentence.

The order follows a beginner's path: pronouns and articles first, then the present tense, negation and questions, and finally the near future and the passé composé. Flashcards Master introduces new cards in deck order, so each rule comes before its exercises.

We built the list from the A1 grammar points of the CEFR and the key contents inventory of Eaquals and France Éducation international. When sources disagree on whether a point is A1 or A2, we kept it in A1. Object pronouns (le, lui, y, en) and the imperfect are left for A2. Every card was reviewed by a native French speaker. Flashcards Master is not affiliated with France Éducation international, which runs the DELF.

Grammar alone won't get you to A1. Pair it with the French A1 Vocabulary collection and some listening and speaking practice.

Next step: the French A2 Grammar collection, with object pronouns, the imparfait and the future.

The words used in the exercises are in the French A1 Vocabulary collection.

Questions

What grammar do you need for French A1?

At A1 you use a small set of simple structures: subject pronouns, articles and gender, adjective agreement, the present tense of regular and common irregular verbs, negation, simple questions, prepositions of place and time, the imperative, the near future and a first contact with the passé composé.

Is the passé composé A1 or A2?

Sources disagree. Many A1 courses introduce it with common verbs, and it is mastered at A2. These decks cover its basic forms with « avoir » and « être », and leave the rest, like participle agreement with « avoir », for later levels.

Can you learn grammar with flashcards?

Yes, if the cards make you produce something. Each exercise asks you to complete or transform a sentence, then you compare with the full answer. Spaced repetition brings back the forms you get wrong more often.

Is there a printable PDF?

Yes. Every deck page has a printable PDF worksheet with the rules, the exercises and the answer key at the end, and the link at the top of this page downloads the whole collection in one file.

Are the decks free?

Yes. Adding a deck is free, and the free version of Flashcards Master lets you review up to 100 cards a day.
