Passé Composé with Être in French A1

The French passé composé with « être »: the verbs that use it, participle agreement and reflexive verbs in the past.

The rules

Which common verbs use « être » in the passé composé?

A small group of verbs must be learned: aller, venir, revenir, arriver, partir, entrer, sortir, rentrer, rester, tomber, monter, descendre, devenir, naître and mourir.
Most other verbs use « avoir ». A few verbs of this group, like sortir, monter and descendre, use « avoir » when they have a direct object.
Je suis arrivé à huit heures. (I arrived at eight o'clock.)

How do you form the passé composé with « être »?

être (in the present) + past participle
je suis allé(e) (I went)
tu es allé(e)
il est allé
elle est allée
on est allé(e)(s), depending on who « on » refers to
nous sommes allé(e)s
vous êtes allé(e)(s)
ils sont allés
elles sont allées

What is the past participle of the -er verbs in this group?

Replace -er with -é, as with « avoir » verbs.
aller (to go) → allé (gone), arriver (to arrive) → arrivé (arrived), rester (to stay) → resté (stayed)

Does the past participle agree with the subject when the auxiliary is « être »?

Yes, like an adjective: add -e for feminine, -s for plural.
Elle est partie. Ils sont venus. Elles sont entrées. (She left. They came. They came in.)

Which auxiliary do reflexive verbs use in the passé composé?

They use « être », and the participle usually agrees with the subject.
Il s'est réveillé. Elles se sont habillées. (He woke up. They got dressed.)
Exception: with a body part after the verb, it doesn't agree: Elle s'est lavé les mains. (She washed her hands.)

Where do « ne » and « pas » go in the passé composé with « être »?

Around « être »
Je ne suis pas sorti. (I didn't go out.)

How do you choose between « avoir » and « être »?

Most verbs use « avoir ». Use « être » with the specific verbs learned in this deck (when they have no direct object) and with reflexive verbs.
J'ai mangé. Je suis parti. Nous nous sommes promenés. (I ate. I left. We went for a walk.)
