Partitives & Quantities in French A1

The French partitive articles « du », « de la », « de l' », « des », and how to talk about quantities with « beaucoup de », « un kilo de » and more.

The rules

What are the partitive articles?

du (masculine), de la (feminine), de l' (before a vowel or silent h), for an unspecified amount of something
du pain, de la soupe, de l'eau (some bread, some soup, some water)
Use « des » for an unspecified number of plural countable things: des pommes. (some apples)

Is « du » always a partitive article?

No.
Je mange du pain (I eat bread): « du » is a partitive article.
Je viens du parc (I'm coming from the park): « du » is the contraction of « de + le ».

When do you use « le / la » and when « du / de la »?

le, la, l', les for things in general, especially after aimer, adorer, détester, préférer
du, de la, de l' for an amount you eat, drink or buy
J'aime le café. Je bois du café. (I like coffee. I drink coffee.)

What comes after a quantity word like « beaucoup », « un peu », « trop » or « assez »?

de, or d' before a vowel, with no article
beaucoup de sucre, un peu d'eau (a lot of sugar, a little water)

What comes after a measure or a container, like « un kilo » or « une bouteille »?

de, or d' before a vowel, with no article
un kilo de pommes, une bouteille de vin (a kilo of apples, a bottle of wine)

What do « du », « de la », « de l' » and « des » normally become in a negative sentence?

They all become « de » (« d' » before a vowel).
Il ne boit pas de vin. (He doesn't drink wine.)
After « être », the article does not change: Ce n'est pas de la soupe. (It isn't soup.)
