How to say “can”, “want” and “must” in French: « pouvoir », « vouloir » and « devoir » followed by an infinitive, as in « Je peux venir » (I can come).

What are the present tense forms of « pouvoir » (can / to be able to)?

je peux
tu peux
il / elle / on peut
nous pouvons
vous pouvez
ils / elles peuvent

What are the present tense forms of « vouloir » (to want)?

je veux
tu veux
il / elle / on veut
nous voulons
vous voulez
ils / elles veulent

What are the present tense forms of « devoir » (must / to have to)?

je dois
tu dois
il / elle / on doit
nous devons
vous devez
ils / elles doivent

What form does the next verb take after « pouvoir », « vouloir » or « devoir »?

The infinitive
Je peux venir. Elle veut partir. (I can come. She wants to leave.)

How do you express a general or impersonal necessity?

il faut + infinitive. « Il faut » is impersonal and does not change with the person.
Il faut réserver. (You have to book.)

How do you say “in order to” when the same person performs both actions?

pour + infinitive
J'apprends le français pour voyager. (I'm learning French to travel.)
