Present Tense: More Irregular Verbs in French A2

The present tense of more irregular French verbs: recevoir, croire, vivre, courir, ouvrir, offrir, plaire, conduire, envoyer and payer.

The rules

What are the present tense forms of « recevoir » (to receive)?

je reçois (I receive)
tu reçois
il / elle / on reçoit
nous recevons
vous recevez
ils / elles reçoivent
« c » becomes « ç » before « o »: je reçois.

What are the present tense forms of « croire » (to believe)?

je crois (I believe)
tu crois
il / elle / on croit
nous croyons
vous croyez
ils / elles croient
« croire que » also means “to think that”.

What are the present tense forms of « vivre » (to live)?

je vis (I live)
tu vis
il / elle / on vit
nous vivons
vous vivez
ils / elles vivent

What are the present tense forms of « courir » (to run)?

je cours (I run)
tu cours
il / elle / on court
nous courons
vous courez
ils / elles courent

How do « ouvrir » (to open) and « offrir » (to give as a present) form the present tense?

They end in -ir but take the endings of -er verbs.
j'ouvre (I open)
tu ouvres
il / elle / on ouvre
nous ouvrons
vous ouvrez
ils / elles ouvrent
« offrir » works the same way: j'offre (I give), nous offrons (we give).

How do you use « plaire » (to please) in the present?

Mostly in the third person, because the thing you like is the subject.
il / elle plaît (he / she / it pleases)
ils / elles plaisent (they please)
Ça me plaît. (I like it.)

What are the present tense forms of « conduire » (to drive)?

je conduis (I drive)
tu conduis
il / elle / on conduit
nous conduisons
vous conduisez
ils / elles conduisent

What are the present tense forms of « envoyer » (to send)?

j'envoie (I send)
tu envoies
il / elle / on envoie
nous envoyons
vous envoyez
ils / elles envoient
The « y » becomes « i » before a silent « e ».

What are the present tense forms of « payer » (to pay)?

je paie (I pay)
tu paies
il / elle / on paie
nous payons
vous payez
ils / elles paient
With je, tu, il and ils, « paye » is also correct: je paye, tu payes, il paye, ils payent.
